Back from a 4 Year Hiatus

February 2, 2017

Well, after 4 long years I’m bringing the blog back to life! I seriously can’t believe it’s been this long since I’ve blogged my work!

So I feel like I have to explain whats been going on for the past 4 years. I graduated with my BFA from Utah State back in 2011. While I was there, I had the amazing opportunity to get a photography internship at Icon Health and Fitness where I learned all about studio lighting product photography. After my internship wrapped up, I was lucky enough became a freelance assistant/photographer for them when they needed me. After I graduated, I started getting my wedding and portrait photography business off the ground but I continued to freelance for Icon, as well as a few different people in Salt Lake. I loved the balance between studio work, and my more natural light portrait work. Well 4 years ago (you can see where I’m going with this) the photographer that I interned for called me up and asked if I’d like a full time commercial product photography job with a new little company called Malouf in Logan and of course I said yes! My naive self thought that, “of course” I could work from 8-5, Monday through Friday and keep shooting, editing, and keeping up on social media with my personal business!

Well, I quickly figured out that wasn’t the case and decided that to keep myself from going completely crazy and wanting to throw my camera down the stairs, I needed to take a step back a little bit from my photo business. I would still take weddings and portrait shoots when people asked, but I wasn’t actively advertising like I had been. Over the next 3 years, I learned SO much being a full time product photographer and was so lucky to work at Malouf and to see it grow from 16 employees when I first started to over 150, but after a while I started to realize something. My favorite shoots at work were the ones that involved people. My favorite part of the week were my shoots on the weekends with my incredible clients, and I was so excited to get home so I could work on my personal work.

It wasn’t until last year as I was getting close to the end of my maternity leave that I knew I needed to make a change and get back to doing what I really loved full time. So last May, I put in my 2 weeks and got back to focusing on Bethany Reed Photography! 2016 was a big growing year for me. Not only was I focusing on getting my business up and rolling again, I was learning how to be a mom as well, and with a new website and getting the blog back up and rolling, I finally feel like I have my feet under me again. I seriously can’t thank ALL of my clients over the past few years enough for trusting me to be part of their amazing moments, and I’ll be doing “throw back” posts to many of the gorgeous people I’ve been so lucky to photograph over the past few years. So without any further ado, bring on the photos!
