Wedding Guide: Spring Engagements

February 23, 2017

Engagement season is here! And with it comes the excitement of dealing with “spring” weather in Idaho and Utah while trying to plan your engagement photos!

Ugh, I totally know your pain. I decided to get married the first part of March in South Eastern Idaho and who knew what the weather was going to be like! It was a toss up between 2 feet of snow or 60 degree weather depending on how Idaho felt that day. Gotta love it right? Well, I have a few tips for all of you who are trying to figure out how to get awesome engagement photos during this lovely spring season!

1. Think Outside the Box when it comes to Locations

Most people send out invitations about 3 weeks before their wedding day. If you’re having someone design your invitations that takes time, add to that print times and addressing envelopes and that means you usually need to have your engagement photos taken 4-5 weeks before your wedding day at the latest! This can be super tough for people getting married in April or May when you want those pretty “spring” looking photos to match your spring wedding so adjusting your vision on what your engagement photos need to look like can help a lot.

Maybe instead of crossing your fingers and hoping for green grass you plan for a more urban look

It’s timeless, unique, and SO classy! Plus that’s where the snow melts first so you can pretend that it’s a nice spring day, even if it’s a little bit chilly. Another great option is to avoid areas with seasonal plants all together. I’m doing an engagement shoot this weekend at the sand dunes (photos coming soon!) No nasty brown plants=Awesome! If you don’t want to deal with the weather in any form, there are TONS of awesome indoor locations for more intimate, romantic engagement photos, or consider going to a greenhouse. Cactus and Tropicals is one of my favorites. The sky is the limit!

2. Embrace the Snow

Sometimes you just have to deal with the hand you’re given. Sometimes that hand means some really gorgeous snow photos! Like I said before, I got married at the beginning of March, I knew there would be snow in my engagement photos and I personally loved it! I love how clean and white everything looks when it’s covered in snow. Plus you can have cute layered outfits and you have a good excuse to keep each other warm during your photos. It’s a win-win.

3. Bring on the Colors!

I always get asked for ideas on what to wear for engagement photos, but one of the things I think works great, especially with spring engagement photos is having at least one outfit that incorporates a bright color. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the snow or in some gorgeous blossoms, it helps you stand out and it ends up looking great when you print your announcements!

4. Don’t Stress It

Planning a wedding is crazy hectic as it is, so don’t stress over what you can’t control. If the weather is bad, you can always reschedule your photos or find an awesome indoor location you might like even better then your original vision. Or embrace the craziness that is spring and make taking photos in the rain one of the best memories from when you were engaged! The real trick to awesome engagement photos, no matter what the season is, is to be in love, have fun, and let your photographer worry about the rest. Happy engagement season everyone!
